Q: What is an Alford plea?

A: According to Black's Law Dictionary, an Alford plea, named after the Supreme Court's decision in North Carolina v. Alford, 400 U.S. 25 (1970), is a guilty plea that a defendant enters as part of a plea bargain without admitting guilt. The U.S. Department of Justice's Justice Manual states that, "Despite the constitutional validity of Alford pleas, such pleas should be avoided except in the most unusual circumstances[.]"
